Was introduced to this little gem by Big John. Holy cow. Holy crab legs. Holy pink squirrel. Everything was divine. Drinks, service, food it was all incredible. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to start my food coma.

Been here twice. First time, I only had appetizers. The spinach artichoke dip was the best thing one I had. The second time, I had the best King crab legs I've ever had! The waiter will crack them for you if you request it. My boyfriend loved the old fashioned and I had a strawberry daiquiri and thought it was ok. I'm planning to go back soon!
(5)Lynda K.
Great food, however it's difficult to have conversation with a small group. Just too loud in there and also feel a bit rushed compared to Waterfront and Piggys.
(4)Tabitha M.
Old school (with an older clientele) steakhouse: wood paneling, stiff drinks, big booths, salad bar, caesar salads, cocktail waitresses. I got the BEST prime rib I've had in a long, long time though.
(3)Andrew L.
Everything at this place is fantastic! Food is amazing! Service is top notch! They always go above and beyond and their portions are generous too!
(5)Stephanie G.
We are new to the area and did not know what to expect, but we really enjoyed this restaurant. We loved the salad bar idea, being able to build your own salad. The prime rib may have been a little too pink for medium rare, but it was one of the best steaks I have ever had, as well as the biggest (it covered the whole plate!). Thus, with what you get for the money, I think it is money well spent.

I will never be able to explain this- but this place has amazing crab legs. Absolutely incredible. I also recommend the mushrooms and steak. The drinks are also good (incredible Brandy Old Fashions). Yes, this is a fancy restaurant for La Crosse. But it is worth it. Try to stay in the bar area or the outdoor patio. The restaurant area doesn't have as nice of ambiance. We have been here for a few events and their event space was nice. It didn't feel overly like a banquet hall. It has character. Eat the crab legs. Enjoy.

I ate at the Freighthouse with my husband when we were in town a few weeks ago. According to the locals, this is where La Crossians go if they want to be seen 'out' on a Friday or Saturday night. As the food goes - meh. It's dark. The food is clearly more about cranking out quantity than creativity and quality. Their wine and beer selection is mediocre. Mixed drinks from the bar are good. I had some salmon special that came with something like 4 cooked cups of greasy rice. If I had to eat here again, fine, but it's not on my short list of La Crosse favorites.
(2)Jayde D.
Crab legs are fresh and amazing! It is pricy for dinner, but oh so worth it! And they gave us a free desert for our anniversary.
(5)Mike G.
I live up in Minneapolis and have ate at great Steakhouse's in many major cities around the United States. But the Freighthouse still holds the award for best Filet! The Teriyaki marinated Filet is easily the winner as its the best tasting, tender cut, and always prepared perfectly. Their Lobster, shrimp, salad bar, and sides are all top notch as well. The staff is very well trained and the decor is great. Not to mention the prices are actually incredibly reasonable compared to Minneapolis or anywhere in a major city.
(5)Paul J.
A must-stop when in La Crosse...great steaks, love the salad bar. Great bar with live music on weekends too.
(4)Melissa G.
My husband and I were there last night and the swordfish was out of this world!!!! My husbands char-crusted filet was done to perfection and the salad bar is to die for!!!! Can't wait to go back!
(5)Kay S.
My husband and I love to eat out and have tried most restaurants in the LaCrosse area, and the Freight House is by far the best. Being in the retail meat business, we find their steaks and seafood to be of the finest quality, seasoned and cooked perfectly. The staff has always been courteous and helpful. The atmosphere is casual elegance. This place is an island of excellence among a sea of mediocrity. LaCrosse's finest!
(5)Rebecah M.
The place is beautiful, especially when decorated for the holidays. The creepy statue by the 1st floor salad bar was very off-putting, though. I love a salad bar, but it was a little boring and one of my cucumbers was brown. I love that there are beets, they were delicious! Maybe they could do a spring mix instead of the romaine. I had the salmon last time I was there and it was pretty good, the sides could be updated, though. Maybe if there were garlic smashed potatoes or some couscous with roasted peppers. I am a big fan of the little loaf of bread, but I wish it was a little crustier and maybe had some rosemary in it. Either that or offer an herbed butter. This time I had the scallops casino. The scallops were cooked perfectly. They were soft and pillowey and succulent, but there was way to much lemon. It went beyond adding a nice acidity to the point that it was pretty much all lemon. Also, they weren't cleaned properly and were a little gritty, plus there was a hair in it. I love the ambiance so much, I just think that things could be tweaked a little and brought to the next level with some interesting spices and fresh herbs.

Went last night with mom and pops and my whole family. Overall experience was very average, which does NOT align with the prices. Entrée price range is basically $25-35 each. $7 to split. No kids menu. Steaks weren't quite perfect. Baked potato and a lame salad bar comes with the entrée. Service wasn't anything to scream about either.
(2)Alex N.
I was quite disappointed with the meal after hearing it was one of the better places for steak in town. I ordered filet and thought it lacked the flavor of your typical filet. It tasted a little on the bland and watery side, although it was cooked as ordered. Even the Manhattan I ordered wasn't properly made. My colleagues all seemed to enjoy their entrees and the asparagus, oh the asparagus. A must for any visit here would be the dessert. The grasshopper pie is the clear winner. Don't pick anything else. 3 stars for a flavorless steak and sub par cocktail, but dessert more than makes up for it.

I was in La Crosse Wisconsin for business meetings and decided to dine at the Freight house restaurant base on recommendations and the great reviews on Yalp! Freight house was a disappointment in general for the price! I ordered their fresh fish of the day (Halibut) and the fish was so overcooked that it was hard to swallow! The salad bar was a joke with only lettuce for greens and the toppings did not appear fresh. I am a world traveler so maybe my expectations are too high but if you are paying over $120 for dinner for two you expect to have better selection of veggies in the salad bar, a main course that is not over cooked, better wine and beer selection!!!
(2)Mike S.
Food is great, along with the atmosphere and the service. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 was at those prices I shouldn't have to make my own salad.

I came to Freight House this last weekend for a family reunion and was very impressed with the food and the service. We came into the restaurant and were greeted by a live musician playing Brown Eyed Girl(+1) and a complimentary coat check(+1). For some reason out of the 20 of us I was the only one that took advantage of the coat check and was mocked for being a "big city" guy. Jokes aside a coat check in January in Wisconsin is great because most of us had 2-3 jackets on. Our group was then led through an absolutely huge restaurant to the very back where we had a private room with a fireplace(+1). So far I have been in this restaurant for 2 minutes and could not ask for anything more. Now we got a table for 20 which is hard to accommodate so instead they gave us 2 tables for ten in a private room, next best thing, but not quite satisfactory for our family. We then had different family members try to re-arrange the tables for 10 minutes to provide for the optimal seating arrangement. This was a bit of a fiasco, but definitely par for the course for my family. The wait staff handled it perfectly(+1). They let us do our thing and just checked in occasionally to make sure we didn't need any help or weren't ready to order. Once we finally arranged our table into something acceptable we ordered. And boy did we order, I personally tried every appetizer, the prime rib, the salmon, the Caesar salad, and the mixed vegetable side. It was all delicious.. The prime rib was a huge piece of meat and was cooked perfectly(+1). All the appetizers were delicious although the mushrooms and artichoke dip were probably my two favorites. The Caesar is what you would expect, but huge. Way bigger than necessary before you eat a 12 oz steak, but this is definitely not a complaint. Overall everything here was fantastic. the food, the service and the ambiance were top notch. I didn't pay attention to the price too much (thanks Grandma), but the cost of the meal was definitely indictive of the quality of the restaurant.

Server was good the meat lacked flavor. My wives filet was horrible we had to send it back. Only been there once I do not think ill try it again.

The Freighthouse used to be the best of the best. The last three times I have visited (last night being the most recent) I have been extremely disappointed by their beef. The quality is terrible. My steak and prime consistently has been flavorless, unseasoned, overcooked usually (my rare turned to medium when when served), and tougher than tough. Even my friend's New York Strip lacked flavor, was leathery, and overcooked. Love the crab legs, and that was the only thing saving the meal. They were excellent. For two of us with one drink and dinner -$133+. For that kind of money I should want to eat the entire meal. I gave up 1/3 through the steak, and left it.
(1)David O.
I have had dinner here several times. Always the prime rib and crab legs. I have always found it to be excellent. Love the steamed vegetables , Best brandy old fashions made with Corbel brandy. Also I have never had a better Golden Caddy anywhere. Great location on the Mississippi River . Lots of history,

By La Crosse standards, Freight House is very fancy, expensive and tasty. However, it would be nice if they served grass fed beef and more sustainable seafood (not just atlantic salmon and sea bass). However, my father-in-law's halibut was quite tasty! My prime rib was giant, but not quite as melt-in-my-mouth tender as I would have liked. Drinks are awesome (nice and boozy!). Salad bar is not bad (the first time I went there a few years ago, I loved it, but on subsequent visits, the salad greens were a little wilted and the fixings could be more diverse (maybe jicama, radishes, shredded parmasean cheese). The best thing about this restaurant is the waitstaff--friendly and professional servers who are proud and enthusiastic about their restaurant.

The first thing I noticed when we walked in was the "Old Time Supper Club" feel of this place. Dark Wood, low lighting and Sinatra playing softly in the background all brought me back to my childhood when my Dad would take Mom and me out to Supper Club near our Cottage. As soon as we reached our table, I knew how I had to start the night. A Brandy Old-Fashioned Sweet. Just like my dad! Diane ordered the same thing, but the Sour version. They were great! Each sip brought a smile to my face as I remembered how cool I thought my dad was sipping his cocktail and letting me steal the Cherries. The menu is straight to the point. No fancy molecular gastronomy or fancy little Tapas Plates here. Just big hunks of High Quality Meat, Fish and Seafood served with simply prepared flavorful sides. Our friend started with a trip to a well stocked salad bar. Diane and I chose the Served Salad option, which was a wonderful Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Mandarin Oranges and a Raspberry Vinaigrette. If this Salad was on the regular menu, I would order it every time. For my entree, I ordered A Combination of Prime Rib and Scallops. Since it was a combo plate, I was expecting a small piece of meat (maybe 10 oz.). What I got seemed like half a cow. OK, a little exaggeration, but at least 24 oz. of perfectly cooked, tender, tasty beef! .The Scallops(about 10 small ones) were sweet and went great with the mushrooms and peppers they were served with. I paid a little extra for some steamed asparagus with Hollandaise Sauce. The Sauce tasted really good on the Prime Rib. I ate all the Scallops and half my meat and still had enough leftovers for 2 decent lunches. Diane loved her 8 oz. Filet with Asparagus and Wild Rice. As a matter of fact, She impressed our waitress by joining the clean plate club! Our friend loved his Swordfish Special. The Freight House entrance is wheelchair accessible in a way I really appreciate. The ramp is integrated right into the architecture of the building so well that you don't even realize it's a ramp. Thanks to the great ambiance, wonderful food and outstanding service, our night at the Freight House was a complete joy and I hope we have the opportunity to return often.

My husband, father and I ate here while we were on a birthday weekend for my dad. It was a Friday night earlier this fall, so it was busy. All staff was hopping. We had about a 30 minute wait, but didn't mind at all. We grabbed a table in the beautiful bar and enjoyed listening to the live music. The bartender gave an excellent wine recommendation, even my two beer drinkers had a glass. Once we were seated for dinner we couldn't decide what we wanted, so we each ordered and shared. We had the lobster, crab legs and porterhouse. Our waiter was very accommodating to our requests and brought birthday dessert out for us as well. I am in LaCrosse at least once a year and this has been a must each year. It is money well spent in a friendly atmosphere.

Just went to the Freight House for sons college graduation. This place is awesome. The food is probably the best we have had in a long time. Had seven people for dinner and had everything from steak, prime rib, crab legs, lobsters. there was not a complaint to be heard. The food was prepared perfectly and had wonderful flavor. We were seated almost immediately and the server Levi was great, very knowledgable about the food and menu and was very patient and helpful. Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone for any occasion. Would visit this restaurant again if in the area. No complaints..

Freight House used be one of the high-end restaurants in La Crosse. This restaurant has seen good days and bad days. Originally this establishment was used as a train freight loading and unloading station way back when. As new trendy and fancy restaurants opened up, Freight House might need to come up with a new way to attract customers. Interior is outdated (still historical look) and still has the typical menu from many years ago (still good tasty food though). Their service is still excellent. For visitors from out of town, you might think that this restaurant is one of the ordinary steak restaurants you have ever dined (depending on where you come from) They are well-known for prime steak (or engineering cut which is huge) and salad bar. To the town's standard, their menu are a bit pricier side (if you are coming from a bigger city, you may feel lucky to have the prime steak with the decent price). Although I prefer a bit darker ambient in a restaurant (specially during dinner time), Freight House even has darker lightning which might bother some customers. Their food taste remains the same and still very tasty with excellent service. If you look for a steak dinner in town, I highly recommend this place. * Service: Excellent * Price: Pricy compare to similar restaurants in La Crosse area * Atmosphere: Somewhat historical museum quality but a bit darker lighting and outdated interior * Food Quality: Excellent * Parking: Plenty of private parking lots (no charge) and street parking (no charge) * Recommendation: Their prime ribs or any steak menu. Their live music is awesome and do check their facebook site to obtain upcoming information

I have been to the Freighthouse before. Never for dinner just for live music in the bar. In town for business, I thought I would give their menu a look. I didn't recall the place having such a dark feel. It was actually difficult to see the menus. The service was pretty good. We were seated almost immediately. Not bad for 8:30 on a Saturday night. Our cocktail waitress was attentive and helpful. I have to say that the food looked better on the menu than it was in actuality. The prime rib was a little tough and without much flavour. It is my guess that the meat was purchased based on cost rather than quality. When I spend $30 on a steak it had better be very good. The halibut, fresh fish of the day, was not firm. Soggy fish is not my cup of tea. The salad bar was nothing special. I have seen similar offerings at Pizza Hut. If I had seen the salad bar prior to ordering I would have skipped it all together. The music was excellent. Blue Jupiter was tight and the harmonies outstanding. Such a treat! I will probably be back. But only for drinks and live music.

This used to be the place to go. Now it has a little competition on its plate! The pros: Elegant yet casual atmosphere. Dark and romantic, has a beautiful bar downstairs where they often provide a band on the weekends. The waitstaff and service is top notch. The salad bar is always fresh and amazing. Everyone loves it. The cons: You can't make reservations so you end up filling up on drinks at the bar. (That may be a pro for some of you!) The food, particularly my favorite, the filet, is just OK. It used to be so good, but now compared to Waterfront or Kate's, it is just average. (The butternut squash served with brown sugar makes up for it!) No outdoor seating like the Waterfront. Nothing spectacular or new on the menu. In general, this is a 4 star restaurant. Nothing too mind blowing yet can still make your night feel special.

The Freight House is somewhat of an institution in La Crosse. It isn't formal, but its not casual. Somewhere in the middle, jeans and a polo will suffice. The salad bar isn't much to look at but for some reason is always a crowd pleaser. The fish options aren't the safest choice. The other seafood, has always been great for us. (Shrimp, Lobster, Crab) The steaks are what they are known for. Also, if you are in La Crosse and are just looking for an upscale bar and or some appetizers this is a great option. The bar is large (probably about 15 tables) and the bartenders are very well trained, as are the cocktail waitresses. They have live music one or two nights a week. Check out more of my reviews at ShawnKemp.yelp.com

This place can be hit or miss. They can make a good key lime martini, which I always appreciate, and they have a vegetarian platter that is huge if only steamed vegetables... The salad bar is a disappointment, but if you're looking for a nice place to go in La Crosse and the Waterfront is full, this is going to be your next best option.
(3)Julie R.
My biggest beef is with this restaurant was the initial impression. We had a wait for our table, which we had no problem with, due to the fact that they don't accept reservations. we went to the bar..., and this is my biggest complaint... those bartenders need to SERIOUSLY GET OVER THEMSELVES.. .. I have never been treated more rudely by any bartender, I got my drink, it was ok, my husband asked for olives in his drink and that was ignored. There was a total absence of humanity ... This totally put a damper on my nite, there were like 4 guys back there. and they would rather rearrange bottles and shine glasses then interact with the people they are so expecting TIPS from...??? TIPS... To Ensure Proper Service ... sorry, I used to do your job and you fail at it miserably!!!!!!! Once seated for dinner, our service was superb, we ordered a bottle of wine which arrived promptly and served nicely, The rest of this not so stellar review has to do with the meal. I don't care to serve myself when I am paying for a meal, so I ordered the house salad. It would have been REALLY good had it not been overdressed, the vinegrette overpowered the rest of the flavors. I ordered the Prime Rib and Shrimp, the beef arrived lukewarm at best, but the shrimp were warm,,, unfortunate, because they were overcooked and rubbery. My husband ordered the Prime and Scallops.... we do NOT recommend the scallops, that is all I am going to say.... if you feel you need to try these and dispute me...that is your sad luck. The place is beautiful, and the wait staff warm and engaging (with the exception of the downstairs bar) We had a decent nite... but I cannot recommend it if you are expecting to be pampered with Exceptional food.

I have been in town for work quite a bit over last few months and have tried almost every place in downtown area. The Freight House came highly recommended, but fell short. We had a group of 12 and every steak was overdone. I also had their scallops which were I guess odd. In some kind of green pepper sauce which I did not care for. Certainly not worth the price. Digger's and Piggy's are two better options for a similar price point and experience.
(3)Reannen M.
AWESOME salad bar...fantastic Prime Rib and Lobster!! Worth the money.
(5)Aaron P.
Used to be my favorite restaurant in town, the prime rib and crab is always excellent. The salad bar always makes me happy too, everything is always really fresh there and just pops. However it's just not exciting anymore, their menu doesn't really change, except the prices the crab has gotten significantly more expensive over the last couple years. The competition in La Crosse has gotten a lot better while TFH has remained stuck in 1998. It's still good, but if I'm going to drop 130 bucks on dinner with my wife, these days, I'm going elsewhere.
(3)Eric G.
Charming steakhouse located in an old train station. Great ambiance, food portions were generous, salad bar had good fresh, selections. Desserts were amazing - be sure you have a friend with a spoon to help you finish!
(4)Forrest T.
Crab legs were amazing. Very large and they crack them for you. Prime rib was also cooked very well. Service was spot on both nights. Salad bar is small but has great options. A must visit in La Crosse, WI.
(4)Lynn K.
Loved the food. Lots of steak and seafood. Huge wine selection. The bar was very fancy looking. I have ate there a handful of times and loved it every time. They do dinner only and don't take reservations. Lots of parking available.
(4)Gretel S.
The Freight House has a great atmosphere and excellent service. We went out for our anniversary, which was the only reason we paid so much for dinner! Definitely on the high side for La Crosse, but we felt it worth it. We were seated upstairs near the second bar. I was impressed with their prime rib, through the sides were just fine. What was the knockout for us was the desert - definitely get the triple chocolate and the turtle pie if you get a chance. Like another commenter, I was surprised at how casual people dressed in such a nice place - something I'm still getting used to in the LAX area.
(4)Frank M.
Unique setting but over priced food! I had the filet and scallops ($39.99) & was wildly disappointed with the scallops. The staff was friendly and very attentive. Overall, experience and history of the restaurant was better than the cuisine.
(2)Lizzi C.
I love this place! It's perfect for a romantic dinner. The wait to be seated was about an hour and a half but it was worth it. The atmosphere is beautiful-it has so much charm. The menu is unbelievable. We started out with the jumbo shrimp cocktail and the artichoke hearts. My filet for dinner was amazing and my friend had prime rib with lobster. Amazing desserts, too! Freighthouse has won a bunch of awards including "Best Restaurant in Town." Live entertainment Friday and Saturday night, extensive wine list... If you are ever in the area, don't miss out!!!

FH is, more or less, a La Crosse institution. As far back as I can remember, most people that eat out in the area will reference FH as one of La Crosse's best. It is currently undergoing a change in ownership, which can sometimes also be a change in quality but it is too soon to tell. I cannot accurately say how many times I have eaten here but, suffice to say, it is more than 50 times. I have tried most things on the menu and by La Crosse standards, it has been among the most consistent in terms of quality. Known for its steaks, I find it puzzling that FH has never brought in actual Prime graded cuts of meat; for those of you that have had a good prime cut of beef, you know what I am talking about. I suspect that the majority of La Crosse diners would not be willing to pay the premium that prime beef commands. FH provides a salad bar that is pretty good; you can select from a number of fresh toppings and I don't recall any times where any of these toppings have been of poor quality. Also, the wine and spirits selection is probably the best in La Crosse; everything from reserve cabs to single malts. Perhaps the biggest asset that FH has is the ambiance/environment. It is located in an old train depot, hence the name, that has a good amount of character and feeling. High wooden ceilings and a second level dining area. Most impressive is the bar area. The service has been mainly good with a few blips of seemingly careless wait staff having a bad day. One comment I hear from many people is that they do not care for how loud the restaurant can be. Personally, I enjoy the liveliness of the place as it adds to the environment. If you are looking for a quiet and romantic spot to dine, this probably won't fit the bill; Traditions in Onalaska is more along those lines. Bottom line, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend FH to anyone that is looking for a good dining experience in La Crosse (unless they want quiet and subdued).

This is my most frequented restaurant in Lacrosse. I'm typically not footing the bill though when I go here...keep that in mind. They do something to steak which I thought would be a crime in Wisconsin, but the end result is so amazing....if you go here you have to try their Teriyaki Steak. It's so good. They also do great Crab Legs. Although I've never got any of their specials, they usually have 3-4 Seafood specials that always sound amazing. The salad bar is a bonus. It is an upscale supper club. They don't really take reservations I don't think so you have to go early and hand in the bar, which, although large, is always packed. This place is tops in my book!
(5)Bryan V.
It was just ok. The service and food were good but it's way over priced. No way would I spend money there on my dime.
(3)Tom Z.
I went for dinner on a Thursday Evening. I had the Prime Rib and it was great! The dinner started out with the salad bar. The salad bar had the usual selection. The only thing they could improve was to chill the salad bowls.(I wish more places would chill the bowls) The prime rib was done just right. It was very tender and juicy. The flavor was very good. I had the stuffed baked potato with the meal. The potato was good. The price was a little higher than other restaurants, but the service and food was worth the price paid. I would probably return the next time I'm in the area.
(4)Kathryn P.
The Freight House is not very good, expensive, and the decor is oppressively dark/lodge like. The service was great. The attention by the server was the only good thing about dinner. The bread was dry. The salad bar at Pizza Hut has more options than this one. The steak was completely unseasoned and underdone. The baked potato wasn't screwed up but it clearly was baked dry and unseasoned. The bacon and sour cream on the potato was the best part of the meal.
